The surf conditions in Unawatuna are ideal for beginners, too. If you want to learn surfing you can hire a local instructor and get started right away.
Early morning offshores are best and the sun does not get in your eyes.

Unawatuna Diving
Off the coast of Unawatuna, beneath the placid Indian Ocean lies a wealth of underwater wonderment, including coral reefs, shipwrecks, great variety of fishes and turtles. The turtles still wade on to the shore to lay their nests and eggs. For more experienced divers, there are a few wrecks and some underwater caves between Unawatuna and Galle.
Galle Fort
You can spend hours exploring the famous Dutch fort, go shopping at one of the oldest markets of Sri Lanka and the modern shopping complexes or you can enjoy the feeling of "the good old times" at one of the colonial-style hotels and restaurants.

Unawatuna is rich in its biodiversity. Over sixty species of endemic birds, including Terns, Egrets, Herons, Sandpipers, Kingfishers, and more rare Lesser Whistling Duck, Asian Palm Swift, White Breasted Waterhen, Turnstone Loten's Sunbird, Black Bittern, had been sighted in the locality by the ornithologist, Clive Byers. These birds are mostly sighted in the remaining marshy area and Rumassala Hillock.
Unawatuna is a good starting point for 1/2 or one day trips to the Yala National Park, the Kottowa rainforest, Hikkaduwa or the Dodanduwa Lagoon with its millions of fruit bats.
Very recommendable are visits to the Doovili Ella waterfall in Hiniduma and the Kaneliya Nature Reserve, close to Imaduwa about 15 miles from Galle. At this nature reserve you can find plenty of unique flora and fauna and various insects, small waterfalls etc.
